I made a board game: Psifides, an Aegean island built tile by tile

My own board game is live at Connect Cafe: you and your friends build an Aegean island out of mosaic tiles, live or one move a day. Made for friends who are never free at the same time.

I made a board game: Psifides, an Aegean island built tile by tile

Remember Sunday board games? The box in the middle of the table, the pieces everywhere, one person reading the rules out loud and another saying “come on, we'll learn as we play”. That's the table I wanted to set up again.

So I made a board game from scratch. My own rules, my own artwork, our own names. It's called 🧩 Psifides (Greek for “mosaic tiles”), it's live today at Connect Cafe, our online café on webcafe.gr, and, to put it the way the kids do, it rocks.

Close-up of the island: temples, a mine, shops and houses made of small stones, with a meander along the coast
Every tile is laid like an ancient mosaic floor: marble, ochre, terracotta, olive. A meander runs along the coast.

An Aegean island, tile by tile

The idea is simple. Each turn you draw a tile and fit it into the island: road to road, village to village, field to field. If you've played Carcassonne you'll feel at home straight away. Only here home is an island of our own, with windmills, wells, sanctuaries, healing temples, oracles and mines. 79 tiles in 30 kinds.

And the island looks like its name. I didn't want yet another game of shiny icons. Every tile is drawn from small stones, like the mosaics we used to see in museums and at excavations, and the sea is made of blue stones with the waves in them.

Your villagers, and a little cunning

Everyone has 9 villagers. After you place your tile you can send one there: on a road they become a carter, in a village a lord, in the fields a shepherd, at the Oracle the Pythia. When a road or a village is finished, whoever has the most villagers on it scores.

That's where the fun starts: where to put the few you have, and when to join your village to your friend's so you can take it right out of their hands. Friendships have been tested over less.

A tile that has just been placed, with small circles where a villager can go
The tile is down: the circles show where a villager can stand.

There are mines too. Your miner brings you talents every turn, and 3 talents open a shop in a finished village, with an awning in your colour. From then on, anyone who builds next to it pays you rent. Yes, just like real life.

A market on the island: shops with awnings in different colours, next to villages and a mine
The awning has the colour of the player who opened the shop.

For friends who are never free at the same time

This is the part I love most. I wrote it last time too: I'm building Connect Cafe to keep my friendships alive, and to find people I lost along the way. But our friends today have jobs, kids, shifts and hours that never line up.

That's why Psifides can also be played one move a day. You set up a table for 2 to 6 and choose how long each player has for their turn: from 2 minutes to 2 days. When it's your turn, a 🔔 waits for you in the lobby. If someone is late, a bot plays for them so the game doesn't stall, and ⏰ Nudge reminds them you're waiting. If nobody's around right now, you play against bots and start straight away.

And while you play, you talk. To everyone, or with a 🤫 whisper to just one player, for the odd alliance of the moment.

Table chat next to the island: messages to everyone and a whisper in purple
A whisper shows in purple and says who it goes to.

Imagine waking up to “your turn” from the game you started last night, with a whisper from your best friend: “watch the village top right”. That's how a conversation starts. That's how you find each other again.

The end of a four-player game: the result goes on the leaderboard, and then… rematch?

The whole game in 13 slides

If you want to see it all at a glance, or show someone before you set up a table, here's the presentation (in Greek). Swipe or use the arrows, and ⛶ Cinema shows it full screen.

Slide 1 of 13: Psifides — build an Aegean island, tile by tile. 1–6 players, people or bots, live or one move a day Slide 2 of 13: An island you build together: 79 tiles in 30 kinds, 9 villagers each, 1–6 players, 3 talents open a shop Slide 3 of 13: Every tile a mosaic: stones in the colours of an ancient floor, finer ones for temples and houses, a meander along the coast Slide 4 of 13: Draw, rotate, place: turn the tile, pick a spot, confirm Slide 5 of 13: Villagers where they pay: carter, lord, shepherd, priest, doctor, Pythia, miller, miner Slide 6 of 13: Mines, talents, shops: miners bring talents, 3 open a shop, whoever builds next to it pays rent Slide 7 of 13: Whatever closes, pays: roads, villages, wells, landmarks, fields, shops and talents Slide 8 of 13: Live around the same island, or one move a day whenever you find the time Slide 9 of 13: The table is set up inside the café: waiting room, open games, your turn Slide 10 of 13: Table talk: to everyone or a whisper to one player, quick phrases, word filter and reporting Slide 11 of 13: On phone, tablet or computer: turn deadlines, a bot for whoever is late, a nudge Slide 12 of 13: One island, one leaderboard: the server replays the game, ties share the medal, rematch Slide 13 of 13: Shall we build an island? Games, Psifides, at connect.webcafe.gr

Still in the workshop

To be honest: in the game you'll see an “IN PROGRESS” label. I wrote the first line of code three days ago, on Sunday, and I'm still polishing it. Now and then something may get stuck. So I want to hear what you think: a rule that confused you, a tile you couldn't find a spot for. Write it in 💬 Στέκι, the café chat. I read everything.

Shall we build?

Go to connect.webcafe.gr, tap 🎮 Games and then 🧩 Psifides. The first time, pick 2 players with one human: you'll play a bot and start right away. All the rules are behind the ❓. The official announcement, with every detail, is on the webcafe.gr blog (in Greek).

And if you're one of the old crowd, send me a message. I have an island for us to build together.
