askTheodor is live — I hired myself an AI workforce
On 17 July 2026 I launched askTheodor: AI workers for sales, ops, research and content that run on your own machine. You hand them the job; you approve what they send. Here's the story from the builder's seat.
The launch
On 17 July 2026, after months of building in every hour I could find, I shipped askTheodor — the product I kept wishing existed while running a company of one. The pitch fits in a sentence: run a company of one, staffed like a hundred. You hire AI workers for sales, ops, research and content, hand them the job, and approve what they send back.
I also wrote a launch announcement over on my agency's blog — askTheodor is live: your AI workforce, on your machine — this post is the more personal version of that story.
Why I built it
I've spent 23+ years building for the web, and the last few shipping MVPs at a pace only possible because AI agents joined my toolchain. But every tool I used treated agents like chatbots — something you talk at, not colleagues you delegate to. Running my agency solo, what I actually needed was a staff: someone to draft the outreach, prep the research, keep the ops moving — while I stayed the one who decides.
That's the core design decision in askTheodor, and it's non-negotiable: agents prepare, humans approve. Nothing leaves the building without your explicit yes. It's the difference between automation you babysit and a workforce you trust.
Your machine. Your data. Your call.
askTheodor is local-first: it runs on your own computer, and your data stays yours. Under the hood it orchestrates specialized tools over the Model Context Protocol (MCP), turning plain-language instructions into real, reviewable actions across your stack — email drafts, research briefs, content, operations tasks — each one queued for your approval, not fired blindly.
After two decades of watching businesses hand their data to whichever SaaS shouted loudest, building the opposite felt right: the team you couldn't afford, working while you sleep, on hardware you own.
